 note = {English education in Japan has been criticized repeatedly, and one of the reasons for this has been concerning vocabulary teaching, especially teaching of polysemous words. The purpose of this paper is to argue that English polysemous words can be effectively acquired by utilizing the abstract tools of ‘core (image) schema’, ‘metaphor’ and ‘metonymy’, which have been argued as ‘psychologically real’ in the field of Cognitive Linguistics.
